Music is often seen as entertainment, but could learning music actually help shape the way a child's brain develops? The answer is yes. When children sing, move to a beat, remember a melody, follow a rhythm or play an instrument, their brains are processing sound, movement, memory, timing, patterns and instructions at the same time. Musical training can give the developing brain repeated opportunities to practise skills that support concentration, language, coordination, memory, creativity, self-control and emotional wellbeing.

For young children, these skills do not simply appear. They develop gradually as the brain grows and children gain opportunities to listen, respond, remember, practise and interact with the world around them.

This is where music can become much more than entertainment.

Developing Brains Are Being Asked to Do a Lot

Think about what we expect from young children every day.

We ask them to listen to instructions, participate in group activities, remember what they have been told, wait for their turn, communicate with others, manage their emotions and concentrate long enough to complete an activity.

At the same time, they are surrounded by stimulation.

There are conversations, movement, toys, sounds, screens, other children and activities continually competing for their attention.

That is a great deal for a developing brain to process.

When a child misses part of an instruction, becomes distracted during group time or forgets what they are supposed to do next, it does not necessarily mean they are unwilling to participate.

They may still be developing the brain skills needed to filter distractions, retain information and focus on what matters.

The challenge is finding enjoyable ways for children to practise these skills without making learning feel like another demand.

Music provides a natural opportunity to do exactly that.

Musical Training Gives the Brain a Reason to Pay Attention

One of the most valuable things about music is that it encourages active listening.

Imagine I play a simple rhythm and ask a group of children to copy it.

It sounds like a basic activity, but consider what the child needs to do.

They need to listen carefully. They need to remember the pattern. They need to wait until it is their turn. They need to coordinate their hands and they need to reproduce the rhythm they heard.

That one activity involves attention, memory, timing, coordination and self-control.

The child is concentrating, but it does not necessarily feel like a concentration exercise. It feels enjoyable.

A song might suddenly become quieter and the children need to notice the change. A rhythm might become faster. They might need to freeze when the music stops or wait for a particular word before playing an instrument.

Each experience asks the brain to pay attention to specific information and respond appropriately.

Rather than expecting movement to stop before learning can begin, music allows movement to become part of learning.

Children might march to a beat, clap a rhythm, dance to a song, use percussion instruments or follow a sequence of movements.

Now the brain has to connect what the child hears with what their body is doing.

They might move quickly when the music becomes faster and slowly when it changes. They might stop when the sound stops or perform a particular movement when they hear a particular musical cue.

The brain and body are continually communicating.

Rhythm and Patterns Exercise Memory

Music is filled with patterns.

There are patterns in rhythm, melody, movement, lyrics and sequences.

Recognising patterns is also an important part of learning.

When children clap a repeated rhythm, remember what comes next in a song or follow a sequence of actions, they are using memory and prediction.

For example, I might ask children to clap twice, stamp their feet and then tap their knees.

They need to remember the order.

If I suddenly change the pattern, they also need to notice that something is different and adjust their response.

Now we are adding another important skill: mental flexibility.

The child is not simply remembering information. They are listening for change, responding to a cue and adapting their behaviour.

Music can also make information easier to remember because rhythm, melody and repetition give information a structure.

This helps explain why children can often remember songs and actions long after an ordinary instruction has been forgotten.

Musical Training Can Support Language and Listening

Music also gives children opportunities to become more aware of sounds, words and speech patterns.

The parts of the brain responsible for processing sound, language and memory are active when children listen to music, distinguish between sounds and sing.

Songs can introduce new words and sentence patterns.

Rhythm activities can help children hear syllables and speech patterns. Listening games can encourage them to notice differences in pitch, volume, rhythm and tone.

These skills can support children's ability to listen carefully and communicate confidently.

Music does not teach language in isolation. It allows children to hear language, remember it and participate in it through repetition and enjoyment.

Playing Instruments Adds Another Level

Introducing instruments can make musical learning even more powerful.

The moment a child begins holding or playing an instrument, the brain has even more information to process.

Children might be counting beats while listening for a cue. They may be remembering lyrics while coordinating hand movements. They may be watching somebody demonstrate an action while listening to the music and preparing to copy it.

Different areas of the brain are being asked to communicate with one another.

Musical experiences can also include visual learning.

Children may follow picture cards, colours, shapes, simple musical symbols or another person's movements. They are connecting what they see with what they hear and what their body needs to do.

This combination of sound, movement and visual information can make music a particularly rich learning experience.

It also allows music to complement many of the learning experiences already taking place within early childhood settings and the Early Years Learning Framework.

Music Can Support Emotional Development Too

There is another part of brain development that should not be overlooked.

Emotion affects learning.

A child who feels interested, curious and involved is more likely to remain engaged.

Music can create excitement, anticipation and enjoyment.

A child might wonder which instrument is coming next. They may wait eagerly for their turn to play the drum. They might concentrate carefully because they want to copy a rhythm correctly or listen closely because they know something unexpected is about to happen in a song.

Instead of continually telling children to concentrate, we can create experiences that naturally invite concentration.

Music can also provide an outlet for emotion and energy.

Singing, movement and instrument play can allow children to express themselves while calmer musical experiences can encourage relaxation and emotional regulation.

Learning becomes connected with enjoyment rather than pressure.

Children Do Not Need to Become Musicians to Benefit

Musical training during childhood is not about trying to turn every child into a professional musician.

That misses the bigger picture.

The value comes from giving children opportunities to listen, participate, experiment and learn.

A simple clapping game can encourage attention.

A repeated song can exercise memory.

A stop-and-start movement activity can encourage self-control.

Playing an instrument can develop coordination.

Singing can support language.

Following a rhythm can practise listening and prediction.

Trying something new can build confidence.

Children do not need formal music lessons or expensive equipment before these opportunities can begin.

What matters is active participation.
